Tips for Facebook Timeline.

As of January 31st, 2012, Facebook will be using their new Timeline look on all profile pages.

Here are a few tips I’ve found helpful when adjusting to the new ‘look’ on my own facebook profile page.

Choosing your Cover photo:

Your cover photo is the large photo on the top of your profile page. To choose or change your photo, scroll over to the bottom right corner of the cover photo area and click on “CHANGE COVER”.  You can choose a photo from your facebook photos, or upload one from your computer. The dimensions are approximately 815×350.

Changing Your ‘Favorites’ Boxes:

Your favorites boxes are the little windows below your cover photo. They are: friends, photos, maps, likes, notes, etc. You can choose which ones are seen by your friends. To edit your favorites, you will need to click on the little white box with the number in it. Mine has a number “1″ shown in the image above.  Once you click on the number box, it will expand all the boxes. Hover the mouse over the top right corner of the boxes to EDIT them. You can choose to move them around, or remove them completely from view.

*If you don’t want your friends shown publicly, you can change that by clicking on the friends box, clicking on EDIT in the top right of the page, and selecting ONLY ME, or whatever privacy setting you would like.

Featuring/Removing Posts

To feature a post, hover over the top right corner of the post and click on the star. This will expand the post the entire width of your timeline. Click on the star again, to UNfeature the post.

To remove or edit the post, click on the pencil to choose from the options seen in the photo above.

*This is one of my top tips for facebook timeline before you go live. It will allow you to remove or hide any posts you don’t want seen on your timeline.

Quick Reference by Year
On the right sidebar, you’ll find a Yearly Categories. This allows you or anyone to jump to a certain year to check out posts. (See what I mean about hiding/deleting previous posts) This gives people a quick reference to certain dates in your life.

That being said, you can also add important dates or events that happened in your life before you even had your facebook account. For example, you can add births, marriages, graduations, moves, etc anywhere in your timeline.

Adding Milestones or Events
Click on the center timeline and click on the line when you see a large “+” sign. You will be prompted to choose a life event, and have the option to add dates, times, stories, places, and ‘friends’ and photos for this particular event. Facebook will automatically place this life event in the appropriate place in the timeline when you are done!

These are just a few of the basic tips for facebook timeline that I found helpful when I first activated my profile.

When you upgrade to timeline, you’ll have seven days to review everything that appears on your timeline before anyone else can see it. You can also choose to publish your timeline at any time during the review period. If you decide to wait, your timeline will go live automatically after seven days. Your new timeline will replace your profile, but all your stories and photos will still be there.

Scroll down to the bottom and click “Get Timeline”.
