Owning your own business doesn’t equal having control of your business.
What?!
Think about it this way… Does the fate of your business depend on another company, or another person?
For example: An independently owned bookstore was quite popular and very successful. They had all the perks and comforts of a great bookstore, to include a coffee shop. Suddenly, they closed their doors. Why? It wasn’t because they were losing business to Amazon, or the Kindle.. it was because the lease was up on the large building they were in, and the landlord tripled their rent. All of a sudden, their business model quit working because they could not afford the inflated rent.
Their very successful business was suddenly crushed by a third party who they had no control over.
This same thing happens all the time to so many others. And when you think about it, you are risking that same fate with things like Facebook, Blogger, MySpace, etc. You can build a large following on all these sites, but as soon as they believe you have violated policy, or they change the way their program/software works, or even if they shut down or become obsolete… your business and hard work is POOF!.. gone.
Having control of your business could determine the difference between it’s success or failure.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t go out and use all the 3rd party social media networks! I’m suggesting you keep a balance and don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
